Default Dishwasher air breather cap

Hello,

I installed a dishwasher about one year ago. I connected the drain to the garbage disposer. I read somewhere that you need a air cap that is up on top of the sink. Most dishwashers that I have seen have an air cap, but my setup kit didn't include or mention one.

My uncapped dishwasher has been working fine for about one year. What does the breather cap do, and should I go back and add one?

I installed a diswasher a few months ago and it did not come with one either. I think you should have gotten a breather cap with you sink because all I had to do with my new diswasher was install the tube into the existing sink setup.

I think the breather cap allows for a pressure differential so that food for the dishwasher can be sucked up and into the garbage disposal. your connection directly into the garbage disposal may work, but not as well as it probably would with a breather cap.

Thanks that makes sense.
