Default When Screwed Hinges Stop Hinging

Hi,
We had screws come loose in the hinges of one of our entry
doors. The hinge itself was okay but the hole the screw
was in was somehow getting bigger and the screw was
not holding. It caused minor problem with the alignment
of our door.

Anyhow, my mom took some elmers glue and small wads
of news paper and filled the hole with it. Then she put the
screw into the repaired hole and it held very nicely.

Don't know if anyone can use this advice, just thought
I'd share.

Thank you! That definitely sounds like a handy thing to know. How long did she wait for the glue to dry before re-attaching the hinge?

Alternately, you can move the hinge up an inch or so on the door, and correspondingly move where it is screwed to the door frame. This might take a little more time, but it should work just as well.

What your mum did was make her own wood fibre glue. This is glue with fibres in it that mean the glue will hold screws and such more firmly. You can buy tubes of it at the DIY store...any DIY store!

Ah. My husband usually uses toothpicks and glue, instead. Anything that fills it in a bit would likely work nicely for this application.

We have a big old bottle of wood glue that is intended for those types of things. We have never used it. That is a great do it yourself idea for that though!

It's great to haer of so many versions for this common problem. I generally just use any pieces of wood I have to hand such as match sticks to fill in the hole then screw on the hinge. It seems to work fine without waiting for glue to set but hey whatever works for you.

That's very good advice. I have also heard that toothpicks broken and shoved in the hole works well.

My husband would cut a piece of wood round about the size of the hole, then he will hammer the wood into the hole, then he would put in the nail or screw.Works great!!!
