Default Bathtub overflowed

Over the weekend, my husband and I were getting a bath ready for our daughter and got distracted ... Essentially, he thought I was keeping an eye on it and I thought he was ... so it overflowed. It was pretty bad (I think - this has never happened to me or anyone I know before) because it went into the hallway and water even started dripping through the ceiling to the main floor of our house (our bathtub is on the 2nd floor) and to the basement. We (obviously) mopped up all the water and sucked as much as we could out of the carpet, then dried that with a fan. We also turned the heat up all weekend hoping that the heat would help evaporate any extra water? Does anyone know if we're at risk for mold and/or anything we can do to help/fix this situation?

I think you need to check and make sure that your carpets are really dried. they can get spoilt really fast. Try drying them with fans or the reverse of a vaccum cleaner. Mold can set in - but there is little you can do about it - just hope it does not.

You did everything right. Clean the water up as fast as you can, and ventilate the home the best you can.

For carpet just rent a rug doctor or a carpet cleaning machine to suck up the water. Likely if their is any mold growth it will be in the walls or floor.

Mold is likely to grow where their is an environment for it. Such as a damp area with little ventilation.

Good luck

THANK YOU to you both for the words of advice. It's at least a little comforting to know that we probably did all we could. Now I'll just have to try and put the worry to the back of my mind while we wait to see what happens. Does anyone know how to tell if your house has mold? Is there a way other than seeing it on the walls, etc.?

The only other advice I would give is that you could use a dehumidifier for a little while in the rooms affected under the bathroom. That way any excess moisture which could help to start of a damp problem will be taken up by the dehumidifier.
